Economic statistics has been growing as a separate subject at the Department of Statistics since 1952. The greatest credit for this could be ascribed at first to Assoc. prof. Josef Kašpar and later also to prof. Jaroslav Jílek and prof. Milan Matějka. A separate Department of Economic Statistics arose during the reorganization of the University of Economics in 1990. The first head of Dept. was an associate professor Eduard Souček. Professor Jan Seger came as his successor, and later became the President of the University of Economics and the Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics. Since 2008 associate professor Jakub Fischer has been leading the Department.

The members of the Department have been teaching obligatory and voluntary subjects from the field of economic and social statistics and national accounts. In the field of science and research they focus on theoretical possibilities to improve the system of national accounts (especially in the area of capital services), measuring total factor productivity, improving the statistics of income and living conditions or connection between demographic and economic development. Many members of the Department cooperate very closely with the Czech Statistical Office. They are consultants in the fields in question and they are teachers in the postgraduate specialized statistics studies.

Six educators (1 professor, 2 associate professors and 3 lecturers) teach at the Department in the academic year 2017/2018. Furthermore, 2 internal Ph.D. students are at the Department.
